First and foremost, this is an art studio. The fact that the artists that hang out and create here are kids is secondary. I have created a space in which children are given permission to explore their own creativity with passion and confidence. It’s a space where children are able and expected to work as individual artists through their own interests, goals and style.
Kids Art Studio is built on the unique combination of the Reggio Emilia educational philosophy, where children learn through creative experiential play and the Jack Black movie ‘School of Rock’. What I love about ‘School of Rock’ is the supportive and genuinely fun environment that Jack Black creates in his music school. I am drawn to the way the children feel safe to make, play and learn. Driven by their own creative pursuits and interests the children are scaffolded by his technical knowledge. Inspired by these concepts Kids Art Studio believes:
- all children are valued as valid creative beings of our community
- children learn through experiential play
- children should be given a supportive and enriching learning environment based on their individual interests and taste
- children should be given creative choice, responsibility and independence when making art
I am passionate about supporting children to navigate their own creative path and to nurture children’s brave and individual ideas.
